What language did Jesus speak?
We know from the NT that Jesus was fluent in Hebrew based on numerous sources, for instance; because Jesus’ parents were Joseph and Mary were Hebrew-Judeans therefore Jesus’ was technically born a Hebrew (Jew) and lived as a Jew throughout his life, this is how he could have become a Rabbi. One could not become a Rabbi if he was not Jewish and secondly ordained by a recognized council.
“Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi’ (which means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’”
John 1:38
Phrases such as the following which are preserved in the Gospels in their original form are all Hebrew phrases:
(a)“Hossana” – Matthew 21:9
(b) “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani” – Matthew 27:46
(c) “Rabbi” – John 3:2
(d) “Talitha cumi” – Mark 5:41
