What Would Your First Impression Be Of A Christian Who Rocks Tattoos?

I am curious to know why (to the majority of people) a christian who has tattoos is looked at in an awkward light. I mean, I feel that this is a personal conviction. If in your relationship with God, you feel it would be filthy to do such a thing, then you certainly shouldn’t. But if i, being a strong believer, think that if it’s done in an artistic and tasteful way, it’s ok to do it, then should i be able to??

I personally don’t like it. It makes me wonder what your motive is for having one. Are you trying to draw attention to yourself? If so, why? I just don’t see why a strong believer would want to be following worldly trends. Of course, you are “able to do it”. No one is going to stop you. Just know you are offending some people, which the Bible tells us not to do.
P.S. I would never say this in person to anyone with a tattoo.
But you did ask for opinions.

depends on the tatoo. if it is distasteful, sexual, or vulgar, i would wonder how well his walk was going…if it was dragons and tigers and stuff all over his body, i’d wonder if he was former yakuza… if it is weird numerology and folktale looking stuff, i’d wonder is he was formerly russian mafia…if it looked like it was drawn in ink, i’d wonder if he was in the prison ministry…
but i’d keep my thoughts to myself and treat the person as my brother or sister…God loves us all…

Absolutely. A belief set is nothing more than that. If you truly don’t believe it violates your beliefs then it is irrelevant. As for those who don’t like them because they are christian… perhaps they should learn to be a little more christian and stop judging.

  • Thatoneg

well, yeah, you should be able to.
my friend is a christian and she has a tattoo of a cross on her wrist – it’s pretty.
tattoos aren’t a sin. they’re ink. and can be very pretty when done well =]

I agree with you i think its stupid how cristians judge people on their tatoos, they are a beautiful thing and god wont send you to hell for having tatoos.

I really wouldn’t care. Tattoos don’t define a person and it certainly does not define your relationship with God.

  • ?????)?

My first impression is that they like body modification.

    It depends how many,
    in my opinion,
one or two looks good if done right, but more then that is just kind of trashy.

I don’t think it’s a sin, but I think it’s getting beyond trendy. My first impression would be trend follower.

As a card carrying old fart, I’m not overly fond of tattoos, period.

God is understanding and forgiving. Who are we as humans to judge?

i would rock them if i was christian..

The Bible says we are to not mark us up, our body is a temple. On a personal level, I think its gross.

I think tattoos make people look dirty… as in soiled or unclean.
While many who get them claim they are expressing their “individualism” and/or “personality”, tattooing historically is rooted in pagan tribalism. Consequently, even the most innocuous tattoos are generally still viewed by Western Society as either mystic, cultic or the identifying markings of criminals and gang members.
Biblically speaking in Leviticus 19:28 God told Israel: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” This was because the worshipers of pagan gods in those days did these things. While one might debate whether or not there is a Biblical mandate against tattoos for Christians today, the stigma associated with tattoos has abated little, if any, over time and is ample enough reason to abstain from such practices.
Now, since the Bible tells us our bodies are living temples for the Holy Spirit, lets look at Tattoos from a physical health perspective:
Tattoos often cause allergic reactions, skin infections and chronic skin ailments including psoriasis and dermatitis. Tattoos can also cause Toxic Shock Syndrome, Venereal Ulcers, Tuberculosis and tumors which may be benign, or even malignant.
If these dangers don’t make you think twice about getting a tattoo, then consider the fact that you increase your risk of contracting Tetanus, HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, and even Syphilis. Hepatitis C alone claims more than 10,000 lives every year! Even if your tattooist is sterilizing their equipment, blood borne pathogens can survive… and be transmitted… via the common ink wells often used in tattooing.
First impressions notwithstanding, I must add the caveat that I would no more reject a person’s claim that they were a “Christian” on the basis of a tattoo than I would for their being adorned heavily in makeup and/or costly array (which is also advised against in scripture). God alone sees the heart of a person and all believers are a “work in progress”.
Whether you, as a “strong believer” should “be able to” get a tattoo is far less important than how your decision to do so might impact a weaker brother or sister. You mentioned conviction of other believers in Christ and this a pivotal point. 1 Corinthians Chapter 8 warns us that even faith strong decisions can have a detrimental impact on a “weaker brother” and may actually cause them to stumble and sin. Is your artistic expression really worth risking the possibility of wounding the conscience of weaker brethren?
1 Corinthians 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good .
